About Alec

Unlike many professional riders and trainers, Alec’s love for horses and horsemanship, arrived relatively late in life.

Alec started out in the motor industry, never thinking of this as a long term career, but as something to pay the bills!  At that point he was just riding for pleasure, at weekends at a local riding school.

He decided to spend some time out travelling in Australia, not knowing that  this decision would mean the start of a complete change of direction for him!

He began working at Bluey’s Ranch (now called Horseshoe Bay Ranch) on Magnetic Island in Queensland, taking out rides into the bush and on the beach.  Enjoying the climate in Australia and also the horses, he ended up staying for a year!

Coming back to the UK, he returned to his former job but soon realised he was missing the everyday contact with horses.  He made the decision to start professional training towards his BHS examinations and passed his BHSAI in 1999. He opened his own livery yard in 2000, also offering schooling and breaking.  His enthusiasm for teaching and love of horses meant he was awarded the BHS bursary in 2005, which allowed him to continue his training and gain his BHSII in November 2005. Then in 2013 gained his BHSI in October.

Alec found he was a natural teacher, enjoying the satisfaction of watching his clients and their horses reach their full potential. He strives to ensure his clients enjoy their lessons and is able to adapt his style of teaching to suit different types of rider with varying skills and expectations. Alec focuses on the horse and rider as a partnership and will often jump on board during a lesson to demonstrate his point!

Alec began to school and produce his own horses and client’s horses and now has a well deserved reputation as being able to bring out the best in young and inexperienced horses, as well as bringing on the more experienced and established horse. He enjoys breaking horses and has produced many who are now enjoying success competing around the country in all three disciplines.  Xam, bought as a youngster and broken and produced by Alec, is now ridden by event rider Harry Dzenis. He has done well and recently went double clear at 3* level at Blenheim.

He is a calm and confident rider and trainer and enjoys the challenge of taking on ‘problem’ horses for breaking or reschooling.

Alec’s real passion is eventing.  He regularly competes his own horses and client’s horses and has successfully competed at Intermediate level BE, medium level BD and Foxhunter BSJA.

After a busy year making improvements to the yard, including putting in a fantastic new surface on the school, Alec is looking forward to getting out and doing more competing next season.

Alec’s passion for teaching continues and he passed the E and T (Equitation and Teaching) BHSI in August 2010 and gained his BHSI in 2013. He is working towards his BHS Fellowship.
